From: Kayla
My dog's name is Brutus. He is a medium sized mixed breed who showed up on our porch about a year and a half ago, when he was around 8 weeks old. It's always a bit of a chance adopting a stray, kind of like a box of chocolates (you never know what you're going to get), but he has been a great dog for us, very obedient and fun.

I have a dog biscuit recipe that I got from a coworker, I made them for my dog and he seemed to like them (OK, he loved them). The only thing is you have to make sure they are very dry before storing, or else they grow nice fuzzy mold.

Dog Biscuits:

What you need:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/3 cup bacon fat, animal fat, or shortening
  • 1 Tbsp instant chicken or beef boullion granules
  • 3/4 cup non-fat dry milk powder
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1 egg slightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup hot water

What you do:

  1. Combine dry ingredients except for boullion granules. Cut in fat or shortening like for human biscuits. Stir in egg.
  2. Mix the boullion granules with the hot water and mix until dissolved. Slowly pour into the flour mixture, stirring with a fork to moisten.
  3. Form dough into ball and knead on floured board 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Divide dough in half and roll out each part 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Make cut-outs with cookie cutter or make nuggets by rolling dough into 1-inch diameter logs and cutting off 1/2 inch pieces.
  5. Bake at 250-275 degrees for approximately 20 minutes (just make sure they are dry). The shapes should be firm and dry to the touch, but not necessarily brown. You can also microwave these at 50% for 5-10 minutes or until firm and dry to touch. Rotate plate every 2 minutes and turn shapes over after half the time. Cool on wire rack.
  6. Shapes will crisp as they cool. Makes 1 1/2 dozen cutouts or 5 1/2 dozen nuggets.

I just love baking Biscotti in the kitchen! As a Basset-American, I feel that we need to promote the cooking from our culture too. Although we are "opposably-gripped challenged", we can have a full cooking life too! My "thumbed" friend, Eva, has to help me open the refrigerator and turn the knobs on the stove. Anyway, I thought this recipe is really tasty and is great for a midnight snack!
