 "The Mummy Returns," is
the sequel to the 1998 hit, "The Mummy". Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn
OConnell (Rachel Weiz), now married in this sequel, are unwrapping more mysteries in
Egypt. Their son, Alex, comes and creates mischief. These Egyptologists are looking for
the gold bracelet of the Scorpion King. The Scorpion King (a cameo role by WWF star,
The Rock) was a fearsome warrior five thousand years ago. He sold his soul for
immortality, and must return to Earth every 5,000 years.
When Rick and Evelyn discover the gold bracelet, an
adventure begins. Their nemesis from the last film, mummy Imhotep(Arnold Vosloo), is also
needs the Scorpion bracelet. The bracelet possesses the power to resurrect the Scorpion
Kings massive army. Rick and Evelyn must retrieve it soon, before the mummy can
wreck havoc again.
I was
pleasantly surprised by how good "The Mummy Returns" was. I thought it would
lack a good plot. In fact, "Mummy" has a sophisticated story, with intriguing
subplots and exciting twists and turns. There are many flashbacks to ancient Egypt, with
amazing combat scenes. These flashbacks are also important plot points in the film. The
pounding music makes it even more exciting. It was refreshing to watch a movie thats
both well-written and riveting!
The rich cinematography captured the majestic settings. The
camera pans across the massive Pyramids, the long Nile, and sandy mountains. The soft
colors and swelling music created an atmosphere, that swept me away. The 1933 setting
looked especially authentic, echoing the genre of past Indiana Jones films.
The
playful dialogue is especially enjoyable with the talented Fraser. He dryly delivers his
comedic quips, diffusing tension with doses of humor. Weiz is wonderful in the fight
scenes. Many of her best moments include her fancy footwork and quick hands. The Scorpion
King, in his brief appearance, looked stunning against the golden sands of Egypt. His dark
warrior braids swayed, as he dispatched his enemies with his mighty sword. The Rock is to
be the star in the prequel "The Scorpion King," being made now!
"The Mummy Returns" with a vengeance!
