joanneblue.jpg (7010 bytes)"Galaxy Quest" is a new out-of-this-world comedy for the whole family. The cast of a canceled sci-fi television series have a close encounter with their biggest fans - real aliens! The sci-fi television series, "Galaxy Quest", filmed its last episode eighteen years ago. But it's a cult favorite with hard-core, Trekkie-like fans, who still flock to the conventions.

The former "Galaxy Quest" stars have grown disgruntled with their alter images. Gwen DeMarco, (Sigourney Weaver) wishes her character, Lt. Tawny Madison, did more than just look pretty on the show. Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) is bitter about his alter ego, half-reptilian Dr. Lazarus. He has always played second fiddle to Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), who portrayed Commander Peter Quincy Taggart. His Captain Kirk-like  character gets all of the attention from fans.

A group of real aliens, the Theramins, beg the actors to save them from an attacking species. Jason learns "Galaxy Quest" was broadcasted to the gentle Theramins' home planet, and the Theramins think the show is real (they call the episodes "historic documents"). They believe the heroic "crew" can actually work the spaceship. The cast is taken to a life size version of the show's spaceship, the NSEA Protector. Now the actors of "Galaxy Quest" must take their canceled show for another spin - for real!

Tim Allen has another winner under his belt, or should I say, his tool belt. His role as Jason, playing Taggart, was very similar to his animated alter ego, Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear. It was like Buzz had come to life, and Allen embodied him hand in glove. He also had Captain Kirk-like tendencies. The combination of the two space heroes made for a wildly funny performance.

Sigourney Weaver is known for dramas, such as the "Alien" movies. Here, she winningly stretches her comedic muscles, as a space babe with heart. The gentle Theramins were endearing. "Galaxy Quest" also had hilarious performances by Alan Rickman as the cerebral Dr. Lazarus, Sam Rockwell as the forgettable Guy Fleegman, and Daryl Mitchell as the
childish Tommy Webber.

So, boldly set your ship to warped-speed humor, and see "Galaxy Quest." It's PG for mild profanity.

Galaxy Quest : A Novel
by Terry Bisson

Movie Review:
Titanic
This review excerpted from The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies   along wth an interview with Nell Minow. This blockbuster movie is the winner of eleven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, and is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. The real-life disaster serves as the backdrop to a fictional tragic love story between Rose (Kate Winslet), an upper class (though impoverished) girl and Jack (Leonardo DeCaprio), a lower class (though artistic) boy who won the ticket in a poker game.
