How Can I Save Money
on Birthday Gifts and Parties?

mccoy.jpg (5421 bytes)When it's time for a special occasion, we tend to throw out the budget. Some of us even resort to using our credit cards for these events since we had not planned for them in our budget. With a little foresight and creativity, we can handle these gift-giving days as well as we handle our daily expenses.

One way to give gifts that are not expensive is to watch sales and thrift stores all year long. We do this and stock up on both children's and adult gifts. Then when the parties arrive, we have something on hand.

With a little creativity, gifts can also be made instead of purchased. For younger children, we stock up on roller pin/baking sets when they are on sale at "dollar days" sales and wrap it with some homemade "gak" and playdough. For adults, we buy baskets when they are on clearance, and fill them with a theme. Some of our favorites are italian cooking (pasta, sauce, herbs, and a wooden slotted pasta spoon), or bath time (sample sized shampoos, bubble bath, and a loofa sponge), or coffee (a mug, some coffee beans or homemade instant cappuccino, and a flavored syrup).

Another way to reduce the cost of the adult gifts is to draw names at holidays so there are fewer people to buy for. Also, send cards instead of gifts wherever possible. People are usually very understanding if you explain that gifts are just not possible that year.

For your children's party, do as much of it yourself as you can. Bake the cake from a mix. Have the kids make simple crafts that they can take home instead of giving expensive party favors. Play some simple games that require little expense.

And to make next year's expenses a little easier to handle, plan ahead. Write down how many gifts you expect to buy next year, adding a dollar maximum you want to spend for each. Add up all of those gifts and divide by 12. This is the amount you need to set aside each month to be prepared.

Birthday Party Ideas
From: Monica

Birthday parties for a boy are pretty tough, every year seems to get harder coming up with new ideas. Here are some of the things that we have done in the past, maybe you can get some inspiration.

  • Archeological Dig
One year I went to an educational toy store and got some polished rocks of all different kinds (fool's gold, mica, quartz, tiger eye, etc.) then I bought some food strainers at the dollar store. I marked a sandy area into equal squares (according to how many children are coming) and buried the rocks in each square. I told the kids to pretend that they were on an archeological dig or old miners, then they dug and sifted until each found their treasures. We looked up each different kind in a book and talked about them. The kids all got dirty, learned something and had a great time.
  • Reptile Expert
Another year we had a reptile expert come to the house with all different kinds of lizards, spiders and snakes and talked to the kids about each one. They all got to hold them and again they had a great time and learned a lot.
  • Paint Pots
If you have any sandy areas near your home they may contain what the Indians called paint pots. They are lumps of sandstone that have formed around a softer center. When you break them open the colors inside are all slightly different. We used them to paint all the kids faces (and many of their T shirts too!) with different Indian designs.
  • Making Pots
We found some natural clay and made pots, then colored some of them with the leftover paint pots. If you don't mind the kids getting dirty they have lots of fun.

To this day, all of the kids who came for birthday parties remember them all and have retained a remarkable amount of information from each one. Hope some of these ideas help.

Shoebox Aquarium
waterman.jpg (6038 bytes)waterman2.jpg (5331 bytes)This craft comes from the very popular book, The Absolute Best Play Days. It is great for children age preschool age and up. The book is geared towards creativity and fun learning.  It can be successfully used by parents who home educate their children and parents who want to enrich their children's learning life. This week's Craft of the Week is making an aquarium.  This is featured in the fish section or theme of Pam's book which also includes other terrific "fish" activities and related books that help kids explore the world of fish.
