![]() I love the logical format of your book- guiding a woman from assessing her
health risks and then providing her with the options pertinent to her needs. It's
tailored made. What made you decide to organize the book in this fashion? The book follows the approach we used in our office. Our first goal was
to find out as much as we could about factors that affected a woman's health such as her
personal habits and family history. Her medical history included laboratory results
that gave us a clear understanding of her health risks, particularly the ones that
increase at menopause (heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, Colon cancer,
Diabetes). Except for women who were very high risk for these concerns but not for
breast cancer, we tried to focus on the most natural intervention first. Women at
high risk need to seriously consider hormone replacement. However, they must
understand there are different types of hormones, doses, and delivery systems. Some
women in the perimenopause benefit by the hormone balancing effect of low-dose birth
control pills. All women need to work on reducing stress and take good
vitamins. Herbs can be added or natural hormones compounded for symptom relief as
needed. We have a triangle in the book that illustrates this approach. Doctors
tend to start at the peak instead of the base. Our concept was to move from very
natural health affirming practices, to herbs, then natural hormones and only then to
conventional hormones if necessary to control risks and/or symptoms. The most frustrating thing we see happening is women (and many doctors)
determining what they will or will not take (or prescribe) before evaluating their
health. Whatever choice is made, a woman should know the reason for it and that it
is the best dose and delivery system for her. There is a tendency for women to self-treat
by combining a lot of natural products. No one knows the long-term effect. Our purpose for writing the book was to give women a systematic plan to evaluate their health, empower themselves, and take to their health care provider for help in implementation. If a doctor won't consider a woman's concerns and reasonable choices, she should find someone else who will listen and discuss her particular needs. |
