Sue:
You have written a couple of other books, one being The 150 Most Asked About Questions About Midlife Sex, Love, and Intimacy.  How does your current book about estrogen tie in with this book?   What kind of advice would you give women who are having troubles in the sex part of their lives?

Ruth:
There is a very logical and important tie between The Estrogen Answer Book and The 150 Most-Asked Questions About Midlife Sex, Love, and Intimacy.

Loss of testosterone
coverAt menopause, many women lose not only estrogen and progesterone, but also that bit of testosterone that is also made by our ovaries and testosterone is the only hormone that makes us desirous of sexual intimacy. We women have only 12 to 20 percent of the amount of testosterone that the guys have, but it is that small amount made by largely by our ovaries with a small amount coming from our adrenal glands, that makes us interested in sex. So many women write to me about their lack of libido during and after menopause and their concern about it. Women need to get into their physicians offices and talk about this problem, because just a bit of testosterone added to their "hormone cocktail" (if medically appropriate and safe) can turn the problem around.

I thank you for inviting me to HotFlash. You are doing a marvelous service to women and I am thrilled to be a small part of it. If I can help HotFlash in any other way, now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me.

see the interview with Ruth JacobowitzOne of the strengths of this book is that it is written by a medical journalist and a former hospital administrator. It shares the contents of the interviews that conducted with women about their sex lives at midlife and later, but not their identities.  It is explicit in detailing their desires and their disappointments, their pleasure and their pain, their sexual needs and their search for solutions. 150 Most-Asked Questions About Midlife Sex, Love, and Intimacy:
What Women and Their Partners Really Want to Know

by Ruth S. Jacobowitz

The author, Ruth Jacobowitz speaks: I wrote this book to help women and men understand and work within the changes the occur biologically and psychologically at midlife. The 150 Most-Asked Questions are the top questions asked by the more than 5000 people surveyed for the book by questionnaire and the many many persons interviewed. The answers to those questions come from experts in the seven fields that work with our sexual selves: endocrinology, urology, human sexuality, geriatrics, psychiatry, gynecology, and psychology. My goal with this book is to educate couples about how we age and empower them to get the help they need in order to achieve a first-rate second half of adult life.
