![]() Sue:Welcome to our cyber-interview, here on HotFlash. Ruth: I thank you for inviting me to HotFlash. You are doing a marvelous service to women and I am thrilled to be a small part of it. If I can help HotFlash in any other way, now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sue: I read your most recent book, The Estrogen Answer Book: 150 Most-Asked Questions About Hormone Replacement Therapy. ![]() This
is a superb guide including substantial information about estrogen and various estrogen
products. What made you decide to write about this topic?Ruth: After writing four other books about menopause and estrogen, I thought I was done with the subject, but as I moved around the country giving lectures and seminars, I became increasingly aware of and concerned about the confusion and chaos that continues to surround women's health issues, particularly those affecting women at mid-life. I talk with so many women who still have not found a satisfactory answer to the question, "Should I take estrogen?" The Estrogen Answer
Book is different--it is not another menopause book. It is actually a book
about estrogen and about the options and choices that women have today when they consider
taking estrogen. When I wrote my earlier books about menopause and osteoporosis, many of
the answers that I have provided about estrogen in the book were still unknown and many
new options were still undiscovered or undeveloped. Estrogen pharmaceuticals approved by
the Food and Drug Administration as recently as six months ago are covered in the book.
Ongoing studies that women need to know about and to learn the results of are described. This book also covers phytoestrogen (plant estrogens) (see soy and red clover) and lets women know where to find estrogen in foods and in some new over-the-counter packaged preparations--a few even have a couple of studies behind them. In The Estrogen Answer Book I also raise the question about prevalent myths--such as, herbs are natural so they must be safe. Natural is not synonymous with safe! Think poison mushrooms, think about allergic reactions, and think about the possible side effects of herbs as well as the possible benefits. Be a knowledgeable consumer--that's what the book is about! Meet the Authors |
