Endometriosis & HRT
qa.gif (1527 bytes)Question:
I am 38 and have been diagnosed with severe endometriosis.  I had laser surgery 5 years ago and am considering a hysterectomy.  My question is this: In your opinion is taking oral or transdermal progesterone effective  in inhibiting growth of endometriosis in anyway?  Since endometriosis is fueled by estrogen, some feel that progesterone could counterbalance this overabundance of estrogen. What do you think?

Answer: Progesterone is a 3rd place choice for control of endometriosis that I reserve for women who can not, will not or should not use Lupron or birth control pills.

Hysterectomy & HRT
qa.gif (1527 bytes)Question:
I was wondering if you can take Loestrin if you have had your ovaries removed?  I'm having many hot flashes and feel terrible.

click here to see the interviewDr. Goldstein:
Answer:In women under 50 I often use Loestrin (a low dose birth control pill) as HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) until about age 50. It is a slightly more effective estrogen dosage than standard HRT but often younger women (under 50) need a little more than older women.

In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life.
