(you can also see our first interview with Dr. Goldstein, the interview with co-author Laurie Ashner and an excerpt of this book) Today, in the United States, there are over 42 million women in menopause. The majority of these women are from the baby boom generation. These baby boomers are coming of age, reaching fifty, and want answers. Today's 35 and older club, as is true in their earlier years, want answers to health questions. Before it was natural childbirth and breastfeeding, today it's perimenopause and menopause. Women want to know the best, most effective, and for some most natural ways to manage their menopause journey and avoid potential health consequences. Science, most notably pharmaceutical companies, are feeling the very real pressures of creating good, effective therapies for menopause, and beyond. Prior to the last 5 years little was known about menopause and even less about what happens AFTER menopause. There were few studies done and even fewer ideas of what a woman could or should do to make the second half of her life as good as the first. The picture of graying women over 50 sitting in rockers on the front porch is replaced with speed walking, traveling, vibrant ladies looking towards the new millennium. Today new information about perimenopause and menopause captures our newspapers, news programs, and web sites. We now know that serious health challenges face all women during and especially after menopause. The risk of developing coronary heart disease rises to that of men and looms as the number one killer in this country. Recently, osteoporosis or "brittle bone" disease, has been identified as a silent epidemic. Osteoporosis will affect over 50 % of all women in this country. Without information leading to preventative treatment this epidemic will continue to spiral out of control. How to prevent brittle bone disease, heart disease, and maybe even Alzheimer 's has been a recent and long debated topic for women. As it should be. There is no "one cure fits all approach" to these questions. But the good news is that we have more and more options to help us sort through this maze. The latest entry into the world of menopause and beyond are SERMs. They are more easily known as Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators. Dr. Steven Goldstein a well respected Ob/Gyn and expert in ultrasonography wrote a comprehensive book about SERMs. Along with his co-author Laurie Ashner an accomplished author of over 6 books they put together an easy to understand balanced presentation of this new type of medication called SERMs. Dr. Goldstein and Ms. Ashner's best selling book The Estrogen Alternative talks a great deal about the promise of SERMs and how they differ from tradition types of hormone therapy . The first thing to know about SERMs is that they are not estrogen. This ground breaking book includes thoughtful and useful ideas to stay healthy during menopause, both mentally and physically.
