Sue:
Most of us have been raised on bread, pasta, and cereals. The menopause diet actually
tells us to stay away from these foods. How do we go against our "natural"
instincts and avoid these foods?
Dr.Gillespie
There is no such thing as a "bad" or "good" carbohydrate, but
there is a difference in how quickly it can raise your blood sugar and insulin response.
Breads, pastas and cereals are refined in this country, a process which strips out most of
the fiber.
If you choose sprouted grain breads, such as Ezechial bread or The Alvarado Bakery
California Protein Bread, you have retained the fiber from grains. Pasta needs to be
extruded, not cut, in order to lower its ability to turn your body into a sugar cube. This
is where the issue of portion control comes in: you can eat a lot more of the high fiber
foods than you can low fiber ones for the same calorie count.
Did you know that 1/4 cup of rice uncooked equals a 1 cup serving of rice? Same with
pasta. Now go measure that out...my birds eat more pasta than that! When I switched to
eating a whole grain pasta (once a week) from Italy that uses Emmer wheat, an ancient
wheat with husks present in the actual pasta, I found I ate much less ( 2 ounces was
enough ) than if I ate our American pasta or even whole wheat. So there is a lot to
understanding the effect processing has on our foods and digestion.
When you choose foods that harmonize with your natural hormones, you feel satisfied, well
fed...because you are not on a diet...you are just choosing a lifestyle that can lead to a
healthier, more youthful appearance without the need for drugs or surgery.
Mini-Meals
Sue:
I love your concept of mini meals. I know that I get overwhelmingly hungry a few
times a day and that I can't eat as much as I used too at a meal. What gave you this great
idea?
