Sue:
It's obvious you put so much effort and research into your book The Menopause
Diet, there is nothing quite like this on any bookshelf. As we age and as we
enter perimenopause and menopause
do we become somewhat carbohydrate intolerant?
Dr.Gillespie
The simple answer is YES.
In fact, The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists just released a position
paper that deals, for the first time, with preventing carbohydrate intolerance in
menopausal women.
 Less
than 30 % of the 35 million women in menopause use hormone
replacement therapy, which can decrease your risk of developing diabetes by a factor of 5 to
1, improve blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of a heart attack.
Falling estrogen levels alter the ability of our stomachs to empty as soon as they should,
tacking on an extra hour. This makes women extremely efficient at sucking out the
carbohydrates in food and storing them as fat. It may surprise you to learn that all the
studies on muscle metabolism were done ONLY in men, and when they repeated them as
recently as just five years ago, they discovered that men use carbohydrates for
energy...women use them to store as fat. No wonder women can gain weight just smelling the
calories in a chocolate
chip cookie!
Carbohydrate sensitivity can occur at ANY age,
but it becomes more prominent when women develop hormonal imbalances. Even stress
and hot flashes can make you fat, causing
cortisol to win the battle in directing carbohydrate storage. As menopausal women, we
simply do not have enough estrogen stores to combat the fat storing pull of cortisol, a
hormone released by the adrenals.
Carbohydrate Differences
Sue:
Most of us have been raised on bread, pasta, and cereals. The menopause diet
actually tells us to stay away from these foods. How do we go against our
"natural" instincts and avoid these foods?
