Sue:
How about the role of soy for help in taming perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms?
 Stephanie:
I like soy a lot and it has tremendous health benefits. Even if a woman is taking
an estrogen/progesterone product she should still be eating or taking in soy somehow in
her diet- whether through food ( concentrate soy shake, soy milk) or as a supplement.
I don't believe soy will replace estrogen but it has
terrific health benefits in and of itself. (also see the Joy of
Soy)
Sue:
What is the best way to handle perimenopause?
Stephanie:
Tailoring
the hormone therapy and life style changes for that particular woman is key to good
perimenopause management . Each woman is an individual with her own health needs and
family history of illnesses. I try to consider all of these issues in addition to her
current life style and the quality of life she is currently living. We may look at how her
diet may be contributing to her hot flashes and racing heart. Sometimes it can be as
simple as eating 5 smaller meals a day as opposed to 3 larger meals which is more
traditional in our country. This works tremendously to keep blood sugar in balance and
prevent hot flashes and that "jumpy" feeling.
