Sue:
Why do you feel the medical establishment is so behind the curve when it comes to women and their hormones?

Stephanie:
The medical schools aren't teaching it to the students. In fact, I taught a course at a medical school about women and their hormones.

I told them that estrogen is the body's natural antidepressant and that progesterone is the body's natural anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory. They all looked at me as if I was crazy because they never heard this before. One student asked if he should prescribed some progesterone for an anxious female patient instead of Valium. I said of course! We should treat the underlying cause of the anxiety and not drug women up. In this country there is a tendency to over prescribe drugs like Prozac, valium etc.. instead of giving women what they really need. By using these other drugs many women miss out on half of their lives and have continual hangovers.

depression100.gif (2499 bytes)Clearly there are times, even in my own practice, where we have to for a very short time prescribe an antidepressant because a particular woman may be so upset, depressed, sleep deprived and we're afraid she might hurt herself. Once she starts feeling better I work with her to get her in balance through her diet, exercise, stress levels, life style, and consider what are the best treatment options for her- what type of estrogen, how much, today we have a wide array of choices.

Sue:
What do you say to women who believe that estrogen is bad for them and will lead to cancer?

HotFlash FAQ:
Estrogen & the Mind
Many women taking estrogen report a feeling of well being while taking their estrogen. There is research to suggest a link between hormone use and Alzheimer prevention. In fact perimenopausal women find that in a short time after starting an estrogen product they feel better- emotionally. See an excerpt from an interview with Dr. Goldstein as well as other facts on estrogen and the mind.
