"I'm 43 years old in perimenopause and would like to continue practicing natural birth control or better known as the rhythm method.  But with the changes in hormone levels how do I know if and when I'm ovulating?"

During perimenopause
estrogen and progesterone levels vary greatly.
The same is true for FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinzing hormone).  This is talked about a little less than estrogen and progesterone yet they are just as important to consider as their sister hormones estrogen and progesterone.

These ups and downs can make natural birth control or the rhythm method for example, very difficult if not impossible.  It would be wise to talk with your doctor and/or health care provider about contraception or pregnancy prevention during perimenopause.

Women DO get pregnant during perimenopause.
A friend of mine unexpectedly found herself pregnant with her third child- the other 2 were nearly 16 and 9.  This was not a planned pregnancy but one that occurred because she didn't use any protection because she thought she had the " alls clear sign" because she was in perimenopause and figured she wasn't ovulating.

Some months ovulation still occurs during perimenopause.  Then there are other months where ovulation does not occur.  It can be very hit and miss
