Provera is a form of progesterone.
It's also known as medroxprogesterone acetate or MPA.  It is a synthetic   type of progesterone more commonly known as a progestin.  Provera is the oldest and most commonly used synthetic progestin for hormone replacement therapy (HRT).  It is the progestin being used in the HRT program of the Women's Health Initiative.   It's a synthetic hormone in which chemical groups have been added to progesterone to improve its absorption and stability. Once MPA is taken the progesterone levels in our blood peak in 1-4 hours and fall after 24 hours.  The pills are in different doses; 2.5 milligrams (mgs), 5 mgs, and 10 mgs.  There is concern that progestins may cross out or work to decrease the heart health benefits of estrogen; because of this it's best to take the smallest amount of progestin possible.  Usually 5 milligrams is the recommended dose for cyclical therapy though some doctors do prescribe 2.5 milligrams.

Provera is prescribed to offset or balance out the effects of estrogen. Progesterone and progestins prevent the overgrowth of uterine lining.  This is important because the progesterone or progestin prevents any mutant or irregular cells from developing ( prevents uterine cancer)  in the uterine lining.

Women who take an estrogen and progesterone/progestin product have no greater risk of developing uterine cancer than a woman who has never taken an estrogen and progesterone/progestin product.

There are women who do not do well when taking Provera.  They experience some PMS-like symptoms- bloating, irritability, restlessness, breast tenderness, depression and/or nausea.  Some women may need to switch to a natural progesterone like Prometrium because the side effects of the Provera interfere with their quality of life.
