Premarin is a form of estrogen
made
by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories a division of American Home Products. It's a conjugated
estrogen - conjugated means that it's made up of a mixture of estrogens. Premarin is the
first kind of conjugated estrogen and has been on the market for over 52 years. Most of
the American studies on the long term effects of estrogen on our hearts, bones, brains,
and mortality have been conducted with this product.Premarin is extracted
from the urine of pregnant mares.
When mammals are pregnant they produce huge
amounts of estrogen and the run off is found in the urine. There are quite a few estrogen
compounds made by these mares; these include estrone ( which we also produce and excrete
in our urine), equilin, and 17-alpha-hydroequlin ( horse estrogens- the word equine means
horse), together with smaller amounts of other estrogens.
Indications (for
what it is used):
Premarin is prescribed to alleviate perimenopasual and menopausal symptoms such as hot
flashes, vaginal dryness, heart pounding etc... It's especially effective at
preventing bone loss and protecting our hearts.
Women, with an intact uterus, must take some form of progesterone with any estrogen
product, including Premarin.
Right now Premarin is the most prescribed estrogen in the
United States. Doctors feel comfortable prescribing Premarin because it has been so
thoroughly studied and around for so long.
Dosage:
Premarin is available in pills and in cream
form.
The doses for the pills are: 0.3 milligrams, 0.625 milligrams, 0.9 milligrams, 1.25
milligrams, and 2.5 milligrams. It can be taken continuously or on a cyclic schedule-
generally the last week of the month is the "off" time.
Both Prempro and
Premphase (two other popular forms of hormone replacement therapy) made by
Wyeth too, contain Premarin along with a progestin.
