There are
various forms of HRT
(hormone replacement therapy)
see HotFlash Therapy GuideCyclic HRT
This means a woman is taking estrogen and progesterone
(progestin) in a cycle pattern- not the same amount every day and/or the same hormone.
This is the way birth control pills work. Every week has a different ratio of estrogen and progestin- to mimic the natural cycle. Also women can be taking
progesterone/progestin in a cycle fashion, not every day but for parts of their cycle. The
same can be true for the estrogen though this is rarely done today.
Continuous HRT
This is when the estrogen and progesterone is taken every
day. Products like Prempro are an example of this type of delivery system. HRT patches
also deliver on a continuous basis.

Is HRT Dangerous?
How
Bio-identical Hormones Can Help with Menopausal Symptoms
by Lise Cloutier-Steele
 Since the
U.S. National Health Institutes pulled the plug on their largest study of conventional
hormone replacement therapy (HRT) last year, the media have issued countless reports on
the dangers of supplementing with hormones. Among the important research discoveries:
Conventional HRT does not protect your bones or your heart, two of the primary benefits
once used by doctors as selling points to get women to fill their prescriptions. Another
claim was that the conventional HRT could alleviate the discomfort of severe flushing and
night sweats. In this article, by author Lise Cloutier-Steele of "Misinformed
Consent, she describes how to use bio-identical hormones that are made from plants. You
are welcomed to join our support group and share your experiences with our group of over

Natural vs
Synthetic Hormones
In Stephanie Bender's best seller, The Power of Perimenopasue, she
covers all aspects of perimenopause and menopause. She spends a great deal of time talking
about how to use hormones to balance out the ups and downs of perimenopause and menopause.
Ms. Bender talks about the differences between synthetic and natural hormone
preparations, you'll be surprised to learn what she has to say.

"Replacement" vs. "Suppression" Therapy
Dr. Steve Goldsetein says, "There is a difference between
replacement when menopausal patients who make
virtually no estrogen need it replaced and the concept of "turn off and
substitute" which is what the perimenopausal patient with fluctuating levels of
unopposed estrogen will require for improvement." Find out more

Can HRT Cut the Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence?
Journal of the NCI
(May 2001) by Sue Spataro, RN, BSN
A study published in the Journal of the
National Cancer Institute (May 2001) reveals that HRT or hormone replacement therapy after
a diagnosis of breast cancer does not increase the risk of recurrence of the disease and
may even lower chances that the cancer will return. Dr. Ellen O'Meara, a University of
Washington cancer researcher and the lead researcher on this study, suggests that breast
cancer patients should not fear hormone replacement therapy or HRT. Find out more.

How can birth control pills
help symptoms of perimenopause?
There is a whole new group of BCPs like Loestrin that were created especially for women
over 35 years of age. Not only do they function to help with the often disruptive
symptoms of perimenopause, they work as an effective means of birth control. They
contain just enough estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancies and help with perimenopause. Find out more.
