women's health center
This past November 1999  Women First Healthcare Inc. announced their new product Esclim.   Esclim is a new estrogen patch, or transdermal delivery system of estrogen, made by Women First healthcare Inc..

This form of HRT, or hormone replacement therapy, can only be gotten with a doctor's prescription and is designed specifically for women who are in menopause or are post menopausal.

Esclim's stretchable patch makes it easier to adhere completely to a woman and has less of a chance of coming off as compared with other estrogen patches.

Esclim can be used by women who experience moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, racing heart) and osteoporosis or "brittle bone" disease prevention.

Esclim is prescribed to more women in France than any other estrogen patch. The system was developed and is manufactured by Laboratories Fournier, S.A., a pharmaceutical research and development company based in Dijon, France. Approved in 20 countries, Esclim was studied in more than 20 clinical trials involving over 2,400 women.

The Esclim system is designed to release small amounts of 17 beta estradiol, the principal form of estrogen produced naturally by a woman's ovaries prior to menopause, through the skin on a continuous basis. Known as the first stretchable patch, Esclim comes in the widest range of dosage strengths available, including a more desirable low dosage of 0.025 mg/day, as well as dosages of 0.0375, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 mg/day, thus giving physicians and clinicians the alternatives necessary to customize patient therapy. The patch, which is worn constantly and replaced every three to four days, offers comfort and convenience with its soft flexible foam backing that moves with the skin, and its adhesion properties that accommodate the needs of most active women.

coversee the interview with Ruth JacobowitzAs with other estrogen replacement therapies, the most commonly reported side effects typically include breast tenderness, headache, nausea and abdominal pain. In controlled clinical studies with Esclim, the most commonly reported adverse events were topical reactions limited to the site of application. In general these reactions caused patients little or no discomfort and led to premature discontinuation of treatment in 0.9 percent of patients in these trials.

Ruth Jacobowitz, in her book "The Estrogen Answer Book", does a good job explaining all the various types of hormone replacement therapy, including the available individual estrogen and progesterone products. (see the interview with Jacobowitz)

#1 form of estrogen patch in France
From: Joyce
I have been using the Esclim Estradiol Patch 0.025 mg. for 4 months now. I put it on my buttocks, switching sides. I apply it on   Wednesday and Saturdays. It is absolutely excellent.  I have never  had any weight gain or side effects at all. Did you know that this patch is the #1 form of estrogen patch in France?  it is!!!  It is new to the U.S. What makes this patch different is 2 things, the patch is stretchable so it "moves" with you, also, the adhesive where the estrogen is in the patch is made for women who are hypoallergenic, or have very sensitive skin. I highly recommend my doctor and the Esclim patch because it worked 100% for me.  I have no hot flashes, no insomnia, great sex drive, no anxiety or moodiness, no vaginal dryness, my breasts are normal again, and so am I. If this message helps even one woman I would feel very good.  I know how devastating this menopause can be.  Before my Endo and Esclim there were days I thought that death would be a relief.  I would literally travel to France if that was the only way to keep using the Esclim patch. Love to all, Joyce

HotFlash! FAQ: I can't sleep!!!!
Sleep disturbances and perimenopause
Sleeping disturbances are extraordinarily common during perimenopause. Studies have shown that women over the age of forty have more sleep troubles than their younger counterparts. Look at the television commercial for sleeping aides. They are geared towards women who are thirty five years old and beyond.

In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life.
