"What is
the CombiPatch?
My sister in law has started
using it this month and she loves it."
The CombiPatch is the first type of HRT ( hormone
replacement therapy) to combine both estrogen and progestin in a single transdermal patch
for menopausal women with an intact uterus for the relief of moderate to severe vasomotor
symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
CombiPatch is the
first transdermal product
in the United States to administer a
continuous dose of both estrogen and progestin. Previously, women who would do well with
estrogen and progestin had only two options; either oral estrogen and progestin or an
estrogen transdermal patch ( like Climara or Vivelle) used with an oral progestin.
CombiPatch delivers the estrogen ( 17-beta estradiol) and the progestin (norethindrone
acetate) through the patches adhesive. The patch is clear, thin, and requires changing
only twice a week.
The most common
side effects of CombiPatch,
observed after a 3 month vasomotor clinical
trial were breast pain and menstrual irregularities. You should not use HRT (hormone
replacement therapy) if you are pregnant because of possible risk to the fetus. When you
talk with your healthcare provider about HRT be sure to include a complete family medical
history- breast
cancer, breast lumps, abnormal vaginal bleeding, abnormal blood clotting,
severe headache, or dizziness.
