"My joints ache and hurt all the time since
I've been in perimenopause. Can this be related to perimenopause and what can I do
about it?"
Aching joints can very
definitely be related to perimenopause. Lower levels of estrogen can reduce muscle
strength and increase the experience of stress on your joints as well. In fact,
Japanese women who do not even have a word for menopause because they barely have any
symptoms, do complain of sore or stiff shoulders- this is the major sign they are in
perimenopause or menopause.
Here are a couple of idea to keep the pain down:
- Regular exercise:
Exercise will strengthen the muscles thereby eliminating some of the pain.
The exercise should be consistent and within your ability range.
- Massages:
Massages work to keep the muscles flexible and easily "movable".
- Acupuncture:
Acupuncture works to reduce pain
- Yoga:
Yoga is very good because it maintains not only the strength but flexibility of
the muscles. You also can get a wonderful work- out by doing yoga correctly.
- Estrogen therapy:
Estrogen increases the blood flow and oxygen in the cells, and improves the
production of joint fluid ( which is present in every joint)
- OTC NSAIDS's:
Taking over the counter non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications like Motrin can
go a long way to reduce the pain too.
If the pain doesn't subside contact your doctor.
