![]() Over the last decade
children, in the United States, have been gaining more and more weight. Obesity is
rapidly becoming an epidemic in our youngsters' lives. Whether it's all the
fast food or lack of exercise, children are heavier than ever. This increase in the
national girth is giving way to such debilitating and chronic disease as diabetes, joint and muscle
ailments, and even heart disease.
In response to this troubling trend, the United States Department of Agriculture has
issued a newly changed Food Guide Pyramid, specifically directed towards children.The Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children is an adaptation of the original Food Pyramid issued in 1992. The children's guide features images of single serving foods commonly eaten by children such as a chicken drumstick, a lollipop, waffles, and green beans. It's easy to read and understand for both children and parents. This guide provides an established set number of serving sizes instead of ranges.
