The kids are screaming, dinner is running late, and the dog has just knocked over your favorite vase.  A sharp pain runs along the base of your skull and in an instant your head is throbbing.  Is this just one of your usual pre-dinner tension headaches or is it something more serious?

There are times when a headache is more than just a pain in the head.  It can be serving as a warning sign for a serious underlying health problem.

The signs that should prompt you to call the doctor or go to your nearest emergency room are:

• The headache also comes with neurological symptoms like: dizziness, numbness, tingling, blurred vision or trouble with speaking.  These signs may point to an upcoming stroke.
• The headache comes on faster and stronger than your usual headaches.
• A headache with feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), fever, or a stiffness in the neck could suggest meningitis.
• The headache gets worse over days or weeks and seems to be located at one specific part of your head.
• Some headaches may have a visual component; you may see halos around lights,
  have difficulty with focusing or difficulties adjusting your eyes for a lighted situation to a darkened one.
