Do
you know a teen who smokes?
Is she slowly going up in smoke? Major
reports released in 1998 showed a dramatic increase in the smoking rates among American
teen-agers and college students. The rate at which teens become smokers jumped 50
percent-from 51 of every 1,000 nonsmoking teens in 1988 to 77 per 1,000 in 1996, according
to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released in October. The number of
youths who took up smoking as a daily habit before the age of 18 increased by 73 percent
over the same period. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimates that if current
trends continue, some 5 million youths eventually will die from smoking-related causes.
