healthbytes100.jpg (4156 bytes)Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common occurrence for women. Women tend to get more UTIs than men because of their shorter urinary urethras this is where the urine passes when voiding) and changing chemical balances within their urinary and reproductive systems. Burning when urinating, frequent urination, strong smelling or foul smelling urine with low abdominal pain are usually the hallmarks of a UTI. How can you prevent getting one?

Here are a few tips
that you can easily do to prevent a UTI:

  • Do not delay emptying your bladder.
At the first sign that you need to go, GO!
Retaining urine for any length of time will increase your risk of infection.
  • Always empty your bladder before and after sexual intercourse to keep unfriendly bacteria from entering the urethra.
  • Avoid tight fitting clothes like tight jeans, underwear or pantyhose. Wear cotton crotch underwear to keep the vaginal area as dry as possible; bacteria multiply in a warm, moist environment.
  • Hygiene sprays, bubble baths and soaps may cause further irritation; if you suspect an infection, don't use them.
  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day. This will continually flush out your bladder.
  • Unsweetened cranberry juice has been found to be very effective in preventing bacteria in the bladder from adhering to the bladder wall. Drinking ten to sixteen ounces a day will help you void out the bacteria.
  • Frequent use of chlorinated swimming pools and hot tubs can lower the acidity of the vagina and predispose you to infection.
