Miss Universe and Me
Does the media create an unrealistic sense of thinness?

Introduction | Diet | Exercise

A few days ago while having a bagel
smothered with cream cheese and a cup of coffee, I was thumbing through my latest issue of People magazine. I stumbled across a story about Miss Universe, Alicia Machado. She's a beautiful 20 year old from Venezuela, who won last year's Miss Universe pageant at the weight of 118 pounds. At 5 foot 9 inches she was pretty slim to say the least. Did I say was?

It seems that Miss Machado, according to pageant officials, has gained a bit since winning her crown. She now weighs 165 pounds instead of her winning weight of 118. I wish I weighed 165! In fact, the pageant folks wanted her to step down as Miss U. because of it. In her excitement over winning and not having to diet herself to death for another pageant, Alicia
started eating like a normal human being. Miss Universe now is hounded by reporters and television cameras, who document her weight loss. She can't even work out without somebody from Entertainment Tonight showing up and sticking a microphone in her face.

Donald Trump has since bought the Miss Universe pageant and has stated that Alicia should not step down. But she should lose the weight. What a guy! He now has her at one of his resorts trying to slim down. Is this what being Miss Universe is all about...

Now, you are wondering what does this have to do with me? Well, it has to do with fitness and nutrition which has to do with all of us. Miss Machado's fitness trainer says she should never be 118 pounds because she is a large boned woman. He noted that for her to be 118 pounds was unhealthy, especially since she got there by drinking those diet shakes and taking pills.

The same is true for all of us. If we need to lose weight, sadly, there is no magic bullet. Instead of it being a revolution it is an evolution. Consider this: It took a while to gain the weight; it'll take awhile to lose it. But how?

Let's look at this in two parts:
Diet and Exercise.
