Universe and Me Does the media create an unrealistic sense of thinness? Introduction | Diet | Exercise Exercise I'd like to talk about all the exercise options out there. They range from machines that you can purchase for your home, all the way to basics like walking. Only you can decide what type of exercise is best for you. One rule of thumb though, it should be something that you enjoy. You have to want to do it in order to be successful. Again, because we all are individuals, there will be differences in opinion about what the "best" is. Forgive me if I overlook anything. A couple of notes about exercising. It is a good idea to talk to your physician before you begin any program. She may provide you with insights that you might have overlooked. Also, think about what exercise can fit into your daily schedule. Are you a morning person? Time of day is important for the survival of your exercise program. Video Tapes: I have done just about everyone's exercise video- Jane Fonda, Denise Austin, Mary Tyler Moore; you name I've done it. The great thing about videos is that you can do it anytime, anyplace and they are relatively inexpensive. Most videos have a warm- up and cool -down component which is nice. If you have small children, they also can get into the act. Sometimes the whole family can join in. My personal favorites are the videos by Richard Simmons. They are super fun and the music is great. Richard is hilarious! It has been one of the few that I really have stuck with. The folks in the videos look like you and me. Not super-models. You might want to rent an exercise tape from your local video store. This will give you an opportunity to discover which type you would prefer. Exercise equipment: You see the ads on television. Exercise equipment can be very effective in toning and burning those calories. Many people purchase treadmills because they allow them to walk even on the worst weather days. These machines can be a financial investment, but if you enjoy using it, it is well worth it. Most machines have a trial period so that if you don't like the machine you can return it and receive your money back. Also, take advantage of the free videos they send out about their equipment. Nordic Track in particular has stores in most large malls that contain the exercise equipment so you can try it out for yourself. The same is true for any sports store. Walking and other Sports: The thing that makes exercising effective is that you are moving around for a period of time. Whether it is simple like walking or more involved like tennis, it doesn't matter as long as it is good for you.
