I
remember the best
Halloween I ever had...
It was first grade, 1965. My teacher was Miss Treglia. She
was my most favorite teacher in my life. I was so excited because my mother bought me a
bride's costume. It was a shimmering, white gown, complete with a veil. At the time it was
everything to me. Bride's Magazine couldn't possibly have a prettier dress.
I didn't have clothes to "dress up" in for
playing during the year so Halloween was special to me. I could be glamorous and lovely
for a day. I could feel pretty and light.
I celebrated Halloween with my fellow first
graders with a Halloween party. Suzy Koop's mom was our class mother and always made sure
we had cute decorated cupcakes along with cups of cold Hawaiian Punch. I loved it. I still
remember Suzy's mom smiling as she gave each costumed child a cupcake.
The best part of the day was getting to see what everyone
else was going to wear. Greg was a colorful clown, Suzy a princess, and Louis a pirate.
Miss Treglia made sure to compliment each child about how nice they looked in their
costumes. Most kids had the store bought costumes with the plastic masks. This made eating
a little hard, but nobody cared much. We were just glad for the cakes, the punch, and the
fun.
 Every month
Miss. Treglia put up the monthly class calendar on the bulletin board. She always cut out
some fun shapes to mark each day of the month. For December, every day would be noticed
with a Christmas tree. For September, it was an autumn leaf. She chose orange pumpkins for
October.
 Probably
the best part of the day happened after the party. Unexpectedly my father came to pick me
up from school that afternoon. Even though the party had finished up, I was still wearing
my dress. He brought along his Brownie camera. Miss Treglia and I posed in front of the
class calendar pointing to the thirty- first pumpkin. Me in my dress and Miss Treglia in
her best smile. I love that picture. I still have it.
Maybe this is why Halloween still makes me smile. Maybe
it's remembering Suzy and her mom, Louis and his pirate's patch, Miss Treglia and her best
smile, and me in my bride's dress that makes Halloween special for me.
Halloween Safety
Many
parents worry about the safety of Halloween. I believe with parental attention and
participation it can be a fun time for the kids.
Here are a few safety tips for a great Halloween:
- Always accompany kids when trick or treating. If your kids
are older let them go to the door alone- they will feel like they are on their own.
- Only go to houses in your neighborhood or where you know the
residents.
- No matter how much they beg you, don't let the kids eat any
of the goodies until you get home and can inspect it first.
- If going out in the dark carry a couple of flashlights.
Everyone has to see where they are going.
- Talk to your children before you leave the house. Don't
scare them, but encourage them to walk, not run, and stay together during your rounds.
- Remember manners. Its good to say thank you and avoid
running across other people's lawns.
- Finally have fun. Maybe you would like to get into the
spirit of things and wear a little costume. A cowboy hat, a clown cap or funny glasses
will make the whole family laugh.

The
Truth About Bats
Do you think bats are scary? Do they all
drink blood and attack people? Are they as "blind as a bat"? The answers may be
surprising! We chatted with Kim Williams at the Organization for Bat Conservation about
bats and she shared some fascinating information about the true nature of bats,
the importance of creating bat houses and how you can make your own bat house!!
Halloween bag
Halloween bag will make sure that all that candy
comes home in one piece. I got this idea after years of trying to catch candy coming from
the bottom of ripped bags while trick or treating with the kids. The bags can be reused
every year and are sturdy enough for the most aggressive trick or treater. There are many
ways of decorating the bags from creative stitching to fabric painting. This craft is
perfect for all kids whether it is done at home or in school. |
